How Paleo Diets Affect Your Home’s Drains

The Paleo diet has become quite popular, promising a return to the dietary habits of our ancestors by focusing on whole foods like meats, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds while eliminating processed foods, grains, and dairy. While many embrace the health benefits of this lifestyle, there's an unexpected side effect that often gets overlooked—its impact on your home's plumbing. That's right; your dietary choices can influence the health of your drains! Let’s delve into how the Paleo diet might be affecting your pipes and what you can do to prevent any plumbing issues.

1. Increased Fat and Oil Buildup

The Paleo diet emphasizes healthy fats and oils, including coconut oil, olive oil, and avocado oil. While these fats are beneficial for your body, they can spell trouble for your plumbing. When fats and oils are washed down the drain, they can cool and solidify, leading to a buildup in your pipes. Over time, this accumulation can cause clogs and even damage your plumbing system.

What to Do: To mitigate this issue, always try to dispose of excess fats and oils in a disposal container rather than washing them down the sink. If you don't have a disposal container, you can line a mug with aluminum foil to create a pocket. Simply pour the grease into the foil-lined mug and, once the grease solidifies, remove and discard the foil with the grease inside.

Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before rinsing them, and consider using a drain strainer to catch any solid food particles.

2. Bone Broth Residue

Bone broth is a staple in the Paleo diet, celebrated for its nutritional benefits. However, the process of making bone broth involves simmering animal bones for long periods, often leading to a greasy and gelatinous residue. When this residue is poured down the drain, it can cool and congeal, contributing to blockages.

What to Do: After preparing bone broth, let it cool and skim off the fat that rises to the top. Dispose of this fat in the trash rather than the sink. Additionally, avoid pouring large quantities of broth down the drain at once; instead, pour slowly with hot water running to help break down any fats. Never put bones in your garbage disposal!

3. Increased Food Scraps

With the Paleo diet emphasizing whole, unprocessed foods, there’s often an increase in food prep involving fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats. This can lead to more food scraps and peels finding their way into the sink. While it might seem harmless, these scraps can accumulate and cause drain clogs, especially fibrous vegetable peels like those from carrots and sweet potatoes.

What to Do: Invest in a sink strainer to catch food scraps and dispose of them in the trash or compost bin. Be cautious with using a garbage disposal for fibrous or starchy vegetables, as they can be particularly tough on your pipes.

4. Coconut Products

Coconut oil, milk, and cream are popular in Paleo cooking. While these products are healthy alternatives to dairy, they can become a problem when they go down the drain. Coconut oil, in particular, solidifies at cooler temperatures, potentially leading to stubborn clogs.

What to Do: Similar to other fats, avoid pouring coconut oil down the drain. If you’re rinsing coconut milk or cream, follow it up with hot water to help break down any residue. Regularly clean your sink and drain with a mixture of hot water, vinegar, and baking soda to help prevent buildup.

Paleo enthusiasts often use nut butters like almond or cashew butter as spreads, cooking ingredients, or smoothie additions. While delicious, these thick, sticky substances can stick to the sides of your pipes and attract other debris, leading to potential clogs.

What to Do: Wipe out jars and utensils coated in nut butter with a paper towel before rinsing them in the sink. This will reduce the amount of sticky residue that goes down the drain.

If you're committed to the Paleo lifestyle, there are a few proactive measures you can take to protect your plumbing:

  1. Regular Drain Maintenance: Periodically flush your drains with hot water, baking soda, and vinegar to help dissolve any fats or oils that may have built up.
  2. Use Drain Screens: Install drain screens or strainers in your sinks to catch food particles before they go down the drain.
  3. Proper Disposal: Always dispose of fats, oils, and large food scraps in the trash or compost, not the sink.
  4. Routine Inspections: Consider scheduling regular plumbing inspections to catch and address any issues before they become major problems.
